Production CCA
Presented are new works by Neil Clements and Dorothy Hunter form the exhibition Production CCA. These artists are the recipients of the CCA’s annual commission of artists from our region. A jury consisting of curator Anja Lückenkemper, artist Mary McIntyre, and CCA’s Aileen Burns and Johan Lundh, selected Clements and Hunter from an open call.
Belfast-born Neil Clements lives and works in Glasgow. His practice is primarily concerned with how notions of artistic modernity could be demonstrated to be inherently related, or porous, to broader cultural developments such as music and the field of communications. For Production CCA, Clements uses a range of sculptural and wall-based works to examine institutional collections of 1960s British abstract art and the effect emerging technologies have played on their reception, from the time of their purchase until the present day.
Dorothy Hunter is a Belfast-based artist and writer whose work frequently investigates the politics of presentation. For Production CCA, Hunter has produced work that examines post-conflict spaces – such as the former Armagh women’s prison – and structures in a state of transition, re-representing them in order to question their role and historicisation. This work builds on previous research into disused and re-purposed spaces such as the de-sanctified churches which dot the streets and landscapes of Northern Ireland.
Neil Clements’ recent solo exhibitions include Bad History, The Woodmill, London; A Painting for Emily Genauer, The Suburban, Chicago (both 2011) and Outro, SWG3, Glasgow (2010). Recent group exhibitions include A Picture Show, Gallery of Modern Art Glasgow (2013); Red White and Blue: Punk, Politics, Place,Chelsea Space, London (2012); Industrial Aesthetics: Recent Art from Scotland, Hunter College Art Gallery, New York, and Look With All Your Eyes Look, Frith Street Gallery, London (both 2011).
Dorothy Hunter received a first class honours degree in Fine Art from University College Falmouth (2011). She was the emerging artist at the Crescent Arts Centre (2011-2012), and participated in CCA’s Outbound Residency in Berlin (2013). Group exhibitions include Breakfast at the Rag Factory, London (2011) and BAMS Student Medal Project Exhibition at The British Museum, London (2011). She is currently a co-director of Platform Arts, an artist-led studio group and gallery in Belfast.
