Paul Butler’s Collage Party has traveled extensively throughout Canada, and the US where it has served as a kind of litmus test of wide-open participation. Its premise is simple, come hang out, have a beer, bring some materials, or use what’s here, sit down and get to work. It intentionally occupies the informal margins of art practice, where the seeds for future projects and collaborations are grown.

Context Gallery invites all artists and the public to participate in Derry’s Collage Party; a free space for sharing ideas, for material and social experimentation and for all-inclusive participation in a non-hierarchical atmosphere.

During the course of the project there will be various events, screenings and music. Please check out the website for up to date listing of events. Paul and the guest artists will be participating between 24th July and 7th August and the exhibition/project continues to 21st August.

SCISSORS, TAPE, + GLUE PROVIDED – IF POSSIBLE, PLEASE BRING MAGAZINES FOR OUR STOCKPILE: OLD, NEW, ANY STYLE WILL DO

“Images… images… I’ve got millions of images… screams… orgasms… preachers frothing at the mouth… all the images any hip poet ever shit out.” ?William S. Burroughs

The Context Gallery presents Paul Butler’s International Collage Party; a project that is part performance, part presentation and mostly interactive. Paul Butler’s collage party brings an opportunity for the Context Gallery to bring international and local artists together along with local individuals and groups interested in creativity and exchange. Butler breaks down some of the hierarchies that exist in art circles and attracts others who wish to hang out and make work together.

For this Program, Paul Butler will transform the gallery into a large open studio and create a relaxed work space. To act as catalysts for exchange, International artists Rodney LaTourelle (Berlin/Canada) Louise Witthöft (Berlin/ Denmark) Ruth Van Beek (Amsterdam) Benji De Burca (Berlin/Ireland) Erica Eyres (Glasgow/Canada) will be participating and the collage party will host evenings and afternoons for local groups to share in the creative experience.

Collage Party is a nomadic, collective studio where artist Paul Butler invites the public to make collage alongside him in a social setting. Paul started this social artwork in 1998 in an effort to recreate the art school atmosphere he was missing. In the beginning, he would supply magazines, scissors, glue, music and alcohol and invite his art community to join him in his studio to make collage. It quickly caught on and in 2000 he was invited to host a three-day Collage Party at the prestigious Goldsmiths College (London, UK). Since then, Collage Party has travelled all over Canada, the United States and Europe and has been staged in a range of venues including museums, Universities, elementary schools, galleries, and department stores.
