CCA is pleased to have to support of the Elephant Trust to commission a new work by Noah Angell. Angell’s performance practice takes the form of lectures that frame and lyrically connect his collection of ethnographic field recordings. Past themes have included love songs transmitted via bird and insect messengers, forgetting and negative space in these recordings, and crying and other forms of ritual mourning. Angell’s performances draw out the poetics and politics embedded in the process of creating ethnographic recordings, as they foreground the embodied experience of listening together.
That Celestial Shore is a performance that takes as its premise Irish musical forms as they are found in the artist’s home state of North Carolina. Written for an Irish audience, That Celestial Shore is a gesture of returning these forms, some of which have been uncannily preserved while others have mutated beyond recognition. Angell will detail the numerous and overlapping forces of conflict, climate, labour and loss that shaped these musical forms while airing field recordings from his own collection.
Angell will perform That Celestial Shore in CCA on Saturday, 10th December at 5pm.
