Opening of 10-12 Artillery Street

CCA is pleased to announce the opening of our new space at 10-12 Artillery Street on Saturday, December 1st, from 7 pm until late. Entertainment and refreshments will be provided. Free and open to everyone.

Social Development Minister Nelson McCausland MLA said: “The UK City of Culture 2013 funding that the Department for Social Development provided for the renovation of these arts facilities will permit the development of artistic ability and will provide opportunities for artists to demonstrate their skills. It will give a platform for them to showcase their work as well as being a venue for exhibitions, workshops and outreach projects”.

Head of Visual Arts at the Arts Council of Northern Ireland, Suzanne Lyle said: “The dedication of The Centre for Contemporary Art to the promotion of new and emerging talent from these shores, makes a real difference, putting our artists on the map both locally and internationally. We congratulate them on the opening of their new space and look forward with excited anticipation to the wealth of creativity that will undoubtedly emerge throughout 2013 and beyond, leaving a lasting legacy from which our future talent will grow.”

Ilex’ Cultural Broker Caoimhin Corrigan said: “The renewal of this gallery will serve as a significantly enhanced resource in the city for both local and international artists and will be a key arts attraction during 2013 and particularly during major visual arts events such as the Turner Prize. It will also serve as a community resource to promote the arts by drawing in groups from neighbourhoods across the city and helping people develop their knowledge and skills.”

Culture Company Chief Executive Shona McCarthy said: “The Centre for Contemporary Art has put together a provocative and challenging programme which will play an important part in the 2013 City of Culture celebrations. The improved exhibition space in Artillery Street is a very timely addition to the cultural life of the city and provides a wonderful platform for artists, both local and international.”

Our inaugural exhibition is a new commission by Lee Welch titled If what they say is true. Welch’s show is the result of an open call to emerging artists with a connection to our region. This first commission has been made possible through the generous support of Arts & Business NI, Caldwell & Robinson Solicitors, and The Arts Council of Northern Ireland.
