CCA received over 100 applications from 12 different countries for our inaugural annual commissioning programme, Production Ireland. After careful deliberation, the jury, consisting of Locky Morris, Paul O’Neill, and Emily Pethick, selected Lee Welch, from a shortlist prepared by Co-Directors Aileen Burns and Johan Lundh. Welch’s solo exhibition at CCA will open in November of this year and run until early 2013. Dublin-based Lee Welch has an MFA from the Piet Zwart Institute, Rotterdam, and a BFA from the National College of Art and Design, Dublin. He was recently awarded the Firestation Artists Studios' Sculpture Workshop Residency Award & Bursary, and has previously received support from the Arts Council, Culture Ireland and Dublin City Council. Welch’s work has been featured in numerous exhibitions, such as Screening Room: Dublin, Kölnischer Kunstverein, Cologne, Germany; Amikejo, Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Castilla y León, León, Spain; (WHOOPEE) we're all going to die, Pallas Projects, Dublin; The Marriage of Reason and Squalor, II, Telephone Booth, Rotterdam; WordPerfect, NoPlace, Oslo, Norway; Love Letter To a Surrogate Stage II, Muhka, Antwerp, Belgium; Clifford Irving Show, Objectif Exhibitions, Antwerp, Belgium; A Whole New Ball Game, Banff Centre, Banff, Canada; and Non-knowledge, Project Arts Centre, Dublin. Next year, he will have a solo show entitled Sleepwalkers: Possibilities Contingencies at the Dublin City Gallery The Hugh Lane. This first Production Ireland commission has been made possible through the generous support of Arts & Business NI, Caldwell & Robinson Solicitors, and The Arts Council of Northern Ireland.
