Artist Residency Alternatives
As part of a process of research towards the establishment of an innovative artists’ residency project in Derry~Londonderry, CCA invites a number of organisations to present their position on alternative forms of artist residency. At this public event that takes place at Golden Thread Gallery (Belfast) on December 11th, 2014, curators from Wysing Arts Centre, Cambridge (UK),Treignac Projet (France), and Askeaton Contemporary Arts (Ireland), introduce their organisational practices and upcoming Programmes. The presentations are followed by a panel talk (a recording can be found below) that discuss the opportunities, possibilities, and limits of artist residencies within the system of contemporary art.

Sam Basu is an artist and co-founder of Treignac Projet, France. As an artist he has exhibited at galleries such as Camden Arts Centre, Kate Macgarry London, and Castlefield, Manchester. He also works collaboratively on projects such as AESD: The Agency for Economical and Space Development (with Shahin Afrassiabi), and as editor of Madame Wang: A Journal for Geographically Distributed Collaboration, among other projects.
Treignac Projet is an artist-run space structured around a number of coalitions and group projects. It is housed in a partly derelict former yarn factory in rural France. It hosts a series of residencies and workgroups as well as a curated exhibition program. Its projects promote collaborative modes of exchange and research-manifestation in the arts and across disciplines.
Michele Horrigan is an artist who works primarily in photography and video. She was educated at HfBK Stadelschule, Frankfurt am Main and the University of Ulster, Belfast. She has exhibited in London, Dublin, Mexico, Frankfurt am Main, Copenhagen and Buenos Aires.
She also curates exhibitions, with an emphasis on working with artists in site-specific or context-led roles and is founder and curatorial director of Askeaton Contemporary Arts. She now lives in London and Askeaton, County Limerick.
Since 2006, Askeaton Contemporary Arts commission, produce and exhibit contemporary art in the locale of a small town in County Limerick, Ireland. An annual residency programme entitled Welcome to the Neighbourhood situates Irish and international artists in the midst of Askeaton each summer, while thematic exhibitions and associated events often occur. Through these methods, over fifty artists’ projects have been realised.
With no ‘white-cube’ gallery spaces in Askeaton, artists work in public spaces throughout the town. This form of engagement focuses on the existing dynamics of the locale, intending to bring forward the diverse layers of daily life and create a rich framework for subjective encounters. A local audience is often actively implicated into the development of projects through their assistance or participation. Such an approach is built on a belief that contemporary art can be used as an active hub for local society, as a form of critique, investigation and celebration where artists are at the center of these dialogues playing a primary and fundamental role.
Lotte Juul Petersen has, since 2008, been working at Wysing Arts Centre as Artists & Programmes Curator and has worked closely with many artists including Asli Cavusoglu, Akassen, Ruth Beale, Celine Condorelli, Luca Frei, Laure Prouvost, Christodoulos Panayiotou, Jessie Flood-Paddock, Philomene Pirecki, Giles Round and Bedwyr Williams. Recently she co-curated with artist Giles Round, the group exhibition The Influence of Furniture on Love in Wysing’s 17th Century Farmhouse.
Wysing Arts Centre develops new ways to support artists and enables art and ideas to engage a wide range of people in unexpected ways. Wysing’s large rural site near Cambridge comprises artists’ studios, education and new media facilities, a gallery and project spaces, a 17th century farmhouse and outdoor sculptures and structures. Wysing offers a unique environment for art to be developed and presented; with an ongoing and innovative programme of events, exhibitions, retreats and residencies, and a unique programme for young artists.
This event is made possible with the generous support of Arts Council Northern Ireland.
