Bend, Form, Wrap
Workshop: Saturday 11 November, 2023, 2pm–4pm
“the residue of painting can transform into something else” – Phyllida Barlow
CCA invites artist Ciarraí MacCormac to devise a Public Programme workshop for Deferral | Echo, Kwok Tsui's solo exhibition running 30 September–21 December 2023. During this workshop Ciarraí will show participants how to use formal elements of painting - colour, line, shape, value, texture and space - to create three dimensional objects inspired by Kwok's work.
Through the physical acts of bending, forming and wrapping materials, participants will explore how painting can move away from the canvas frame. The objects will become a spillage and twist of what’s happening around the gallery walls.
During this practical workshop, participants will experiment with ideas around painting and leave with their own painterly object.
Places are limited for this free workshop, booking is essential through our online shop here. All materials are provided. This event is suitable for people aged 16 and over.
Supported by the National Lottery through the Arts Council of Northern Ireland.
Ciarraí MacCormac is a Belfast based artist, originally from Co.Antrim. Graduating with a BA in Fine Art from Bath School of Art and Design in 2014. She is a member and studio holder at Platform Arts, Belfast and is currently the first Freelands Studio Fellow for Belfast School of Art 2023-2024.
Her work centers on a highly attuned bearing toward the materiality of paint, engaging specifically with what she calls ‘paint skins’, her works challenge the perceptions of making, function and how painting can exist. The skins of paint have a performative quality, transitory state and a continuous production of new images. This broader sensitivity of reconfiguration and chance are at the forefront of making. Upcoming exhibitions include a solo show, Ulster Presents, Ulster University, February 2024, Belfast and the group show Freelands Fellows, Freelands Foundation, April 2024, London.
