CCA Introducing: Nessa Finnegan
We're back with CCA Introducing in 2023! Our first online takeover will be by Berlin based, Irish artist Nessa Finnegan, who will be sharing her practice with us on Tuesday 28 February 2023, on our Instagram.
Nessa was nominated by Bojana Janković, an artist featured in our exhibition Ballads of Rhinestones and Newcomers alongside Frank Sweeney and Tom O'Dea, with the work The Uncommon (Travel Area).
Nessa Finnegan specialises in making soft and squishy (wearable) sculptures. Within her work she maintains a healthy dose of voyeurism and discomfort. Using humour and tactile materials, Nessa’s work explores a wide spectrum of established gendered roles and rules as well as authority and power.
During her Takeover Nessa will share her ongoing investigations into historical protective clothing worn in Ireland by women, in particular cloaks. Skillfully made cloaks, worn to protect the body from external forces and in some cases were viewed as a symbol of rebellion. Today, what do our bodies need protecting from? What do we need to rebel and rage against? Why do we still need to create safe spaces beneath our cloaks? Nessa has a few ideas in mind, stay tuned, all will become clear.
Keep an eye on our socials @CCADLD for more information, and follow Nessa over on Instagram and Twitter @NessaFinnegan, and her website here.
