What if species had rights? What if rivers had rights? What if nature had rights? A global and regional movement is asking these very questions. In fact, Derry City and Strabane District Council pioneered the first rights of nature motion on these islands.

CCA is delighted to host a film screening of Rights of Nature, which explores the concept as it is developing in Ireland. Following the screening there will be a panel discussion and Q&A with those involved in the island-wide movement.

The Panel:

Anjuli Grantham (panel chair) is secretary of Zero Waste North West and a PhD researcher at Ulster University (Magee) developing the concept of regenerative heritage.

Mary McGuiggan is a dancer, teacher, and activist. As a founding member of The Gathering, Mary has been instrumental in environmental justice work in the North and bringing the rights of nature movement to Ireland.

Meabh O’Neill is a social and environmental justice activist who introduced the first rights of nature motion in these islands in 2021 when she served as a People Before Profit councillor on the DCSDC.

Marella Fyffe is a Chairperson of Save Our Sperrins, the grassroots campaign protecting the Sperrins from industrial gold mining.
