I feel like a tourist in my hometown
Derry-born artist Darren Nixon would like to invite you to I feel like a tourist in my hometown – an alternative performative tour of our city, developed during his residency at CCA, as part of Testing Ground, a CCA x Jerwood = Supports programme.
"I grew up in Rosemount, Derry and left some years ago to start a new life through art school (in Manchester, where I now live). However, my weekly visits to the Bogside Credit Union with my mother, my encounter with Derry's first techno dj on an escalator at Foyleside shopping centre in 1991 and other odd moments from my ex-life in the city continue to play an oversized role in my thoughts and dreams.
My walking tour of Derry offsets personal memories from my teenage years against the larger backdrop of the Troubles – a very different take on the trauma tourism which has taken over Derry.
I have created a set of audio collages & accompanying videos which we will take with us on our walking tour. I would be delighted to give you a personal tour or for you to join a larger group tour."
