NI Science Festival 2023: Sensing the City
Saturday 25 February 2023, 1pm–4pm
For NI Science Festival 2023 CCA Derry~Londonderry invites artist Jane Butler to deliver a free public workshop during the festival. Sensing the City, a workshop facilitated by Jane, sees art, mindfulness, psychology, and science collide.
The workshop will include a brief insight into the artist's research and practice, an urban walk in Derry~Londonderry to collect sensory data, followed by an activity in the gallery. We all experience and perceive our external environments in a multi-sensory way and the workshop will explore space and place through embodied, hyper-sensual experience, activated through an urban walk including various sensory activities. The workshop will be a way to experience the city in a curious manner with the option to create something at the end.
This is a free workshop, with a limited number of places. Booking is essential and tickets can be booked through our online shop here. It is suitable for ages 16+.
Jane Butler's practice forms a series of enquiries into the vastness of the human mind, and examines the differences in how we perceive the environment and process its information. Her architectural interventions, installations and photography-based works are informed by elusive memories and neurological effects. She utilises surfaces, text, colour and light to explore how the formal aspects of artworks subconsciously affect human experience, and how advances in neuroscience influence how architects and urban planners shape cities. She is interested in the unseen potential of existing urban structures and predominantly works site-specifically to generate poetic responses to city life and connect public and private states.
Jane received a BA Fine Art (Sculpture) from Ulster University in 2009. She is currently an associate member of Array Collective and Co-Director of Household, who work collaboratively with artists, writers, curators and the public to develop thought provoking projects in the public realm. She has been commissioned by organisations in Belfast, Dublin, Galway, Limerick, France and most recently Poland, to produce site specific projects.
Supported by the NI Science Festival, the National Lottery through the Arts Council of Northern Ireland and Derry City & Strabane District Council.
