"Should artists write?"– Writing workshop
Thursdays 3, 10, 17 September 2020, 6pm–8pm
As part of the Reciprocal Residencies exhibitions, writer Meadhbh McNutt will deliver a three-part workshop series called Should artists write? During these sessions participants will engage with selected critical texts, participate in writing activities and discuss work produced. Throughout the workshops, Meadhbh shares ideas and examples with you to create a network for exchange and discussion.
The first session takes Peter Osborne’s Anywhere or Not at All as a starting point to ask: “What is art writing? And to which canon does it belong?” We look at the turn towards conceptual art in the 1960s and 70s (focusing on Sol LeWitt’s Sentences and Adrian Piper’s 1987 letter to Donald Kuspit).
The second session examines the integration of art and theory – and the transdisciplinary career challenges that follow. Work from theorists Fred Moten & Stefano Harney, writer Chris Kraus, and writer-artists Hito Steyerl, Hannah Black and Aria Dean will be shared and discussed.
Taking the lead from Aria Dean’s quote, “…writing to understand something, and making work to test an idea”, the final session invites you to create a work inspired by your chosen example.
The workshops will take place on Zoom. An invite will be emailed in advance. Places are limited and booking is essential here for this free Public Programme event. Please email info@cca-derry-londonderry.org for further details or enquiries.
