Studying Old Masters
Tuesday 26 March 2024, 1pm–3pm
Artist Niall McLaughlin returns to Age Concern, Chapel Road, Derry~Londonderry to deliver an oil painting workshop. Participants will start the session by studying Old Master's paintings to explore the fundamentals of drawing, colour and composition, which makes the work of the masters still effective today. Then Niall will help participants identify and isolate close up crops of these works to create pleasing and exciting compositions, which they will be encouraged to add their own individual expression onto. By making A5 sized oil paintings of these crops, participants will be able to leave with their own works which, although informed by the masters, appear wholly new and unique. All materials are provided, including a selection of printed images to study.
This workshop builds on our partnership with Age Concern, when Niall delivered Still Life Painting in Oil in November 2022 and we invited artist and scholar Lyndsey McDougall to deliver an eco bundle dye workshop in November 2021.
Niall McLaughlin was born in 1997 in Derry. He graduated from Manchester School of Art in 2020, after which he moved back to Derry to live and work. He has since shown in various galleries in Ireland and the UK and is a recent recipient of the Arts Council SIAP award.
