You are invited to CCA Derry~Londonderry on Saturday 28 January, 2022, 1pm–3pm, to add your own hand-stitching to the Energy Quilt, a new piece by URGENCIES (2023) artist and designer-maker Sarah Diver Lang. The Energy Quilt will be displayed as part of the URGENCIES (2023) exhibition at CCA until 18 March 2023.

Sarah states that this quilt is a commentary on energy. Although made using hand block printing techniques and natural dyes, it has, however, taken resource and power to make an object for future warmth. The energy crisis we face is complex, there are both long term and urgent issues to solve. The crisis is not only about the extremely unaffordable energy prices which will force many into heat poverty, but also our unsustainable use of fossil fuels.

Sarah invites you to work alongside Sarah and to add your own time and energy into the quilt through adding hand-stitched marks to its surface. Whilst sewing together Sarah extends the invitation to talk about the energy crisis, considering questions such as how energy will be used in the future and what warmth means to us.

This is a free Public Programme event for the exhibition URGENCIES (2023). Come and join this informal workshop to discuss these ideas and add your own stitching into the Energy Quilt. You can drop in between 1pm–3pm or book your place at the sewing table through our online shop here. Booking recommended.

No experience necessary. Tools and materials provided. Suitable for ages 12 and above. Drop in time: 20–40mins.

About the artist

Sarah Diver Lang is an artist and designer-maker originally from Northern Ireland, currently living, working and exhibiting Scotland. Sarah makes work which reflects our heritage and design past using traditional and digital techniques. Sarah aims to make work and projects which are joyful and celebrate our lives; working with others to create positive solutions and interventions within our communities.

Sarah's work showcases craft's ability to care for our environment and works with people to co-create public art and craft pieces which can inspire and instil pride. Sarah has experience working with artists and communities using many different craft processes to encourage our sense of place and improve wellbeing.
